Well, that's certainly interesting, but I can't see this as being something too practical. What would be the uses of something like this? I can't envision too many places where something like this would be more useful than, say, a hologram of the scene.
I thought about it, and if they could change the setup to lots of real thin blocks instead of a few thick ones, you could in a way hold your girlfriends hand while skyping, or play chess. A soldier oversees could see and feel their child's foot impression despite being thousands of miles apart. Imagine chilling at the office when you see you cats paw impressions shoot across the board.
