I think this is a good thing for several reasons. If the clerk has a legitimately held religious objection to doing her job then she shouldn't keep that job. She's not shooting people on the way out, she's just resigning in protest - as is her right. A job in that position should be held by someone who isn't willing to inflict their bigotry on other people through legal process. They can be bigoted - again, that's their right - but as an agent of the state they should keep that bigotry out of their official business and be a professional.

I also think that she shouldn't have been fired just for holding the view that same sex people shouldn't marry, until she acted on that view and declined to do her job. Thankfully, she quit rather than wait for that to happen.

The other thing about this is that the Supreme Court decision helps to codify some of the more progressive and nondiscriminatory attitudes that are commonplace in this country. And, like those who are protesting are usually so fond of saying, if they don't like it they are welcome to leave. Not participating in the system - and in fact the country - because they don't believe in the direction it's heading is the way that these people should act.
