I would put it up there with Deus Ex, Half Life 1, System Shock as far as "modern retro" games go. It's absolutely worth the play. Just be ready to have a lot of hours to put into this game.
Steam Workshop support is awesome, but make sure you check out nexusmods and/or moddb, there's been a community there for a while. While you're at it, check out the restored content modder's site at deadlystream forums.
