The sugar subsidies and proposed sugar tax is ridiculous, I 100% agree!! I have drastically cut down on sugar intake solely for reasons of economic policy, not for health reasons. I am enjoying increased health as a really nice side effect though! I don't drink sodas any more, and I try to avoid sweet treats and ready-made foods that have sugar in them... I'll still use sugar if I'm doing any baking, but I'm so busy that it doesn't happen often. I treat sugar (or foods containing sugar) as if it cost $10 a bag instead of $2 a bag, and that more or less limits my intake that way. We don't even NEED sugar to eat healthy meals. I can cook a nice dinner of roast chicken, mashed potatoes, and carrots without involving the sugar industry at all.

Yes, I know that was a side thing to your main point, Appaloosa, but it was nice to see someone who also is concerned about economic policy relating to the sugar industry.

This could pose problems for anyone else with the legal name of Elon Musk. Hopefully it's an unusual enough name that this is not an issue.

I also feel that doctors take older people's symptoms less seriously also. An elderly family member went to hospital with stroke-like symptoms, yet the doctors didn't really seem to take it as a big deal. I think they just put down some of that to "old age" but it's not.

100% agree - my immediate thought upon seeing this was similar (and I love your analogy!). Basically, unless people are leaving notes specifying climate change as the reason, what we are seeing is most likely correlation, not causation.

Curiouser and curiouser.... I enjoyed the thorough level of analysis here. Fascinating. I'd never, ever want to own one, due to the security risks and backdoors they found in it, but it was certainly interesting.

This does not surprise me one bit. It's not just a bid to save money for some consumers (although certainly true in the case of some). It's that cable companies have failed to move with the times.

People simply don't have time these days to sit down in front of a TV every Tuesday night for the latest episode of whatever. More and more people are just too busy - and too busy to bother setting up a recording, too. I see the appeal of Netflix first-hand - I'd far rather be a season or two behind on a show I like, so long as I can watch it anytime without bothering to set up recordings. Another old-school thing about cable: many of these don't save your spot in a recording for more than 24 h if you pause a recording. This is ridiculous! How many people have the time (or the mood) to go back to a show within 24 h? By contrast, Netflix saves your spot for ages (I can't remember how long, but it's really long, like weeks). And on top of this, cable companies charge many times the cost of Netflix! Cable is just very poor value for money and has failed to move with the times, so I'm not surprised that the 3 big cable companies will be hard-hit in 2018.

Other retailers have been looking to do their own sales on Prime Day to compete with this, and Amazon's glitches may have resulted in some customers shopping with competitors on Prime Day... Amazon is by no means the only online shopping option, although it's certainly the biggest.

Completely agree with "consider the source" that Wyrwolf said. Yes, if someone is being vitriolic and hateful, why would anyone want to listen to them?! I don't know if trolls realize they are shooting themselves in the foot by doing that! Maybe they are so unreasonable that they don't have enough common sense to realize that being hateful will NOT make people want to relate to their side of the argument (surprise, surprise).

Review of Stars: the private family messaging app that does not require a phone number

Here I'm reviewing Stars messaging, which our family has recently started using. It's a phone and tablet app for families and kids who want a way to message each other without requiring a phone number. In other words, it can even work on a tablet with no data plan (so long as there is a Wi-Fi connection). First I'll briefly explain how Stars works, then outline the pros and cons, and then I'll explain why I feel it's a safer fit for kids than other messaging apps on the ...

Yes! I 100% agree - the last thing software makers need is encouragement to make more bloated inefficient programs that need a ton of RAM just to run. Another reason why I like Linux - it's so streamlined. Other OS's, you feel like it's straining the RAM just to bring up a few windows!

Exactly! I love how you put it "better things to do with my time".... I think that people don't always think that it's more than just the fact of trolls being toxic and annoying, it's also a time thing; we all have better things to do with our time.
