How much are your private conversations worth to the U.S. government? Turns out, it can be a lot, depending on the technology. In the era of intense government surveillance and secret court orders, a murky multimillion-dollar market has emerged. Paid for by U.S. tax dollars, but with little public scrutiny, surveillance fees charged in secret by technology and phone companies can vary wildly.

Shouldn't it say "What we pay the government to spy on us"?
It's not just the expense, but rather, to what lengths these agencies will go to justify those expenses. They must show results, and that is why everyone should be wary. A cherry-picked item here or there that might incriminate an innocent, is not beyond belief. The very source of the accusation(s) not being divulged, even as the information is used by local authorities, as a basis of investigation, and fabrication for charges. Even if innocence could/can be proven, the cost of defense more than likely would financially break most citizens. These agencies must produce, just what that "production" consists of, one can sure, will be of less importance than their collective paychecks.
