The Abandoned Remains of the Superconducting Super Collider in Texas
The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) was a particle accelerator complex under construction in the vicinity of Waxahachie, Texas, that was set to be the world's largest and most energetic. In 1993 the project was cancelled due to budget problems and the Super Collider was abandoned on the fields of Texas.

I remember when this was under construction. My family owned farm land in the area it was being built. A lot of 2nd and 3rd generation farmers lost their land to imminent domain for nothing in the end. It was a great idea, just poorly executed. The guy running the project was a scientist, and was spending money left and right with no regard to total cost. When all was said and done there were warehouses with unused computers, tool chests, desks, and such. What a waste, and what a let down for the area.
