Without knowing what you want to work towards programming and what your past experience is, it's pretty tough to give relevant advice. Assuming you have no experience whatsoever and that you just want to make "stuff", I'd recommend picking up an intro book to either Java or C#. Go through the lessons thoroughly and play with the exercises until you feel comfortable that you understand how everything works. From there, make "stuff". If you aren't ready for your projects yet, continue learning new technology that takes you in the direction you'd like to go.

    Most importantly, have fun!

I'm just sick of drama entirely. I get it at work, at home, all day everyday. Drama on the internet is just too much.

Also, I want to waste less time staring at random stuff and try to get more focused on producing instead of consuming... maybe switching will help me give up this type of time sink entirely.

I don't think hateful and bigoted are the best words to describe this society - don't get me wrong, I acknowledge there are many subcultures that are. I think a more realistic view of society as a whole ties in to change-aversion and ignorance.
LGBT marriage equality gained acceptance by becoming familiar. People without hate or bigotry just didn't understand it and so didn't support it. By coming out of the closet, being seen, and especially becoming more visible in media, ignorant and change-averse society became less ignorant and less change-averse.
I'm probably overestimating the timeline for poly acceptance, because LGBT acceptance WILL open doors here. Maybe a ten year period is more realistic provided there is exposure to the group, especially in the media in a positive light.

We all knew this would come next, but for this issue, I think Robert's dissent on the marriage equality decision is valid. Gay marriage had momentum, and the decision cut through the last of the resistance.

This time, if momentum exists, it's opposing the issue, not supporting it. Over twenty or thirty years, maybe perceptions could be shifted, but I don't think the US is ready for polygamists to ride in on the LGBT's coattails.
