Commented in "The Conners" Stars Face Pay Cuts as Ratings Continue to Sink without Roseanne Barr

The show yesterday did a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49, the zone advertisers want, and that is better than 99% of non-sports stuff on TV. That's not a bad rating and that means it's highly unlikely that they'll be forced to take a pay cut or get cancelled, but I'd guess it is likely they remain a 10-13 episode season show.

Commented in Edward Snowden: Saudi used Israel spyware to target Khashoggi

How does a former American spy on the run with Asylum in Russia know any of this? He's got to just be guessing, I just don't believe that Russia is letting him do intelligence work other than telling them what he knows, so to me it just seems like he's guessing and is using this to keep his name out there.

Commented in iPhones are Allergic to Helium

For a thousand dollars per phone these days that shouldn't be happening, of course the fact it does is also extremely interesting and I'd have never thought about Helium or any other gas interfering with my phone.

Commented in Travelling overseas? What to do if a border agent demands access to your digital device

This is why cloud backup is very important, if you know ahead of time you must leave the country and that this is possible you should back up to icloud or google drive and then wipe your phone, leave contacts on and some things like weather otherwise it will look very suspicious to the border people, but wipe things you care about keeping private, don't use Facebook apps and the like until you get where you are going, then do the process again when leaving the country. This is a hassle and sad that if you want to maintain privacy you must hide your stuff from the Governments of the world, but it's better than them going through your life.

Also, chances are you might not be able to use your phone in whatever country you are going to, do you really need to take it? Perhaps getting a temporary no-frills phone in the host country is better? Here in the US, we can get an AT&T Go Phone for about $100 and it comes with a month of service. I know some newer high-end phones are world capable though.

Commented in Furniture Row Racing is shutting down; Martin Truex Jr. will find a new team

The takeaway from this is that NASCAR has gone out of its way to say there is nothing bad happening in terms of sponsorship and the costs of competing in the sport, yet Furniture Row Racing has gone from winning a Championship last year and dominating parts of this year to shutting down because they can't find the necessary funds and sponsors to continue running. If a Champion that won many of the races last year and several this year can't find a sponsor what hopes do the others have? NASCAR is in trouble.

Commented in ZeroPhone Is "Coming Soon": A Raspberry Pi-Based, Linux-Powered Phone For Just $50

It looks like the internals of an old Nokia phone. If this thing is going to be run on a rpi that means it's OS will be run off of an SD card, I just don't know if that's a good thing. I've had rpi media players and game players and at some point that sd card corrupts, maybe in newer rpi's that isn't a problem but in older ones it was.

Also, I'm willing to bet that price is the cost of the phone pieces and the board not the cost of the case, sd card and charger cable.

As far as the drawbacks are considered, the ZeroPhone will have a smaller screen size — 1.3-inch 128×64 OLED display and will be initially launched with 2G SIM connectivity with 3G and 4G options available gradually.

So... I'd be better off buying some old phone off of eBay or Amazon than this thing due to the lack of data or a screen to use that data with. Because let's face it the most touted feature of this is the no tracking stuff, well it's still a phone there will be tracking in some form.

Commented in Verizon throttled fire department’s “unlimited” data during California wildfire

If only the Fire Department would turn this into a lawsuit over false advertising practices and have them disallowed from using the term Unlimited in their advertising and force them to be very upfront about the slow speeds you get later.
