"We didn't realize that people would actually take the unlimited part of our plan seriously, so we're going to punish everyone because a few people used a lot of data."

It's mobile data plans all over again. Instead of really looking at how much data people would upload, and either upgrading their infrastructure to handle the load or offering data plans that they could afford to realistically handle, they belligerently offer unlimited storage, then remove it and cut their plans down when they find out that they can't deal with the traffic. Why not punish the few people that went crazy with it, then have a maximum 1TB limit for anyone that was considered "unlimited," or something in a similar vein? It's dumb to screw everyone over because a handful of people abused the system.

This really flies in the face of what the new CEO said about Cloud First and Mobile First being the new Microsoft. Instead OneDrive said meet the New Microsoft, Worse than the Old Microsoft. I think it's more about getting those people with 20-25GB of Loyalty Credit in their Free Accounts out of the way and hoping they need to buy the 50GB plan or upgrade to the Office 365 1TB one.
