Totally. Everywhere I've worked there's been that fear amongst my coworkers. I get frustrated because they fail to see The Big Picture. Where bending over backwards for your employer creates a race to the bottom for everyone involved. By working unpaid overtime, you just make it easier for the bastards up top to cut MORE employees out of the system.
I feel the same way, the "pride" people take in working 60+ hour weeks is sad and so counter productive. Your employer would never just give you free money, so why are you giving them free labor with a smile?
Technically if you are salary that 60 hour week is "included" but I agree I try to work my 40 hours and get out of there. Although sometimes it is easier said than done.
Because it's pretty much not a real choice. The "pride" is justification after the fact of a reality that exists. If you're working 40, you're already seen as a slacker, and furthermore anything less than total loyalty (called engagement) is seen as bad. So there's no choice really, but it's easier to swallow if you can convince yourself that you choose that rather than being forced.

I agree but I don't see the culture changing anytime soon when states are making it easier to fire employees for almost any reason.
