While this app is obviously in its early stages, the linked article draws attention to a few aspects of this app that may be worth noting:

    • The creator states having numerous industry contacts that help her find lower cost matches for their brands, which doesn't seem like something a company would do unless they had some sort of incentive.
    • The creator also states that they're currently focusing on user acquisition prior to monetization, so my concerns would be trusting the accuracy and honesty of app-given matches. Even now, there is the potential of "lower end" brands such as Essie, OPI, etc. financing or otherwise supporting the app in exchange for promotion of their brands.
    • That being said, finding dupes for specific colours by searching out blog reviews and swatches can be difficult or impossible - even if the app dupes are sponsored, does it matter if they're accurate?

What do you think of the app? Will you be downloading it to give it a try?

This is really cool, and a neat idea for an app! But I didn't download it myself (I tried, but I don't have the latest iOS and I don't wanna update right now), and I could see it appealing only to a relatively "niche" audience. Personally, I'm happy using "lower-end" brands (though I think OPI's pretty good) for the most part – I don't pick a colour just because it looks like something more expensive. Who would even know?

What I think it would be useful for would be finding close matches for really unique polishes, like expensive Deborah Lippmann glitters or the like.

An app that I think really would be handy to have would be something that just simply collects hundreds and hundreds of swatches for you to browse – something I think SuperDuper probably already has the tools for, from this article's description, but wouldn't be nearly as easy to monetize. As you suggested, it seems highly likely to me that brands could work with the app to promote their colours as close matches (even if they aren't the closest), but it would really only be relevant if you're looking for a specific colour. But something that let you sort by colour instead of by brand would be great!

Hi, Katherine - Thanks for the kind words. We do include dupes for some really unique polishes like Christian Louboutin Scarabee II and MAC Mean & Green. We haven't yet tackled Deborah Lippmann polishes, but they're on our list! If you're not ready to upgrade your OS and download the app, you can follow us on instagram (@get_superduper) where we post a lot of dupes.

I like your suggestion of a cross-brand color search and will add it to our "big idea" list (which is long, trust me... we want to dupe and catalog the whole makeup universe!)

And, if you do have a chance to use the app, would love to know what you think.

      all the best, lk

Hi, @LacquerCritic! I'm the founder of SuperDuper.. thanks for spreading the word! We think dupe accuracy matters tremendously ... what's the point otherwise? To clarify, we do not accept payment for placement in the SuperDuper app, nor do we intend to generate advertising revenue in the cosmetics category. The incentive for companies to send polishes to me is that we'll be sure to test them and include them if they're dupes, but we don't include anything that's not a dupe.. else we'd destroy the whole value prop.

Would love to hear your feedback if you've had a chance to use the app!

    thanks, lk
