Yep, Juche was made up to appease the Soviets, who wouldn't have been very keen to publicly support a quasi-fascist state. It still features heavily in external propaganda, but NK internal propaganda is pretty much all racist Korean ethnonationalism and Kim family personality cult.

About Juche... it's more or less a sham ideology. North Korea's true ideology is a kind of race-based ultranationalism, similar in form to Imperial Japanese fascism.

There's a book called The Cleanest Race: How North Koreans See Themselves and Why it Matters which discusses this in greater detail.

Not allowing people in without an invite is already a way to keep the negative aspects of Reddit culture out.

For instance, the reason Reddit got so racist over time is because it was continuously brigaded by Stormfront, and then over time the Stormfronters decided to stay. Snapzu cannot get brigaded in the same way by people from the rest of the internet because the barrier to entry is so high. We just have to make sure to only invite people in who are nice and interesting!

Hopefully the invites can get through and those people don't wander off! Snapzu needs plenty of people to build a diverse and stable community.

Well, I'm not sure about Reddit ever being cool, but I do remember a time when mentioning Reddit in public wouldn't make people think you might be some kind of crypto-Nazi wannabe rapist.

Again, consideration of intent on the part of the speaker and use of the reasonable person standard on the part of the alleged victim should lead to sufficient clarity in what ought to be banned or not.

Well in real world legal contexts, that problem of subjectivity is solved by 1) using the Reasonable Person standard, and 2) considerations of intent. It shouldn't be any different online.

You know you're too far gone when simply not allowing hate speech is "far left" for you.

Seriously, the way hate speech is treated outside the internet, you would think we're living in a communist worker's paradise, huh?

Are you saying that you cant see any distinction between speech that is just controversial and speech that is not only controversial but also specifically designed to harass and intimidate certain groups of people off the forum?

Why do we ought to scale though? I'd be perfectly happy with Snapzu having the character of a medium size subreddit.

I don't see any of the hardcore commies or censorious SRSers here, so we're good on both counts.

They can't "learn from the past" because the reason this keeps happening comes from a fundamental tension between the need to monetize the site to make a profit, and the inherent resistance of the userbase to marketing, ads, fees, or really anything related to commerce at all.

The only solution is to run aggregators and discussion forums like this as projects that aren't meant for profit. That way a small or medium-sized community can potentially be subsidized by a combination of ads, donations, "freemium" perks, and volunteer labor in perpetuity.

Oh, I was talking about free speech as a principle itself, and so were most of the armchair Reddit protestors. As a matter of government and legal policy, though, you're completely right.

Then how exactly do you think free speech is supposed to work?

IMO, there's always going to be a tradeoff between freedom of speech and quality of speech, and there's no way around that. That's why academia, which is designed to ensure high standards, doesn't allow free speech for everyone; it has a high barrier to entry for submitting articles to journals, and a ruthless process of expert peer review for weeding out bad stuff.

Personally, I would nearly always take quality over liberty, which is why I'm very happy that Snapzu has actual rules and a decent barrier to entry.

This comment has gained traction and has turned into a conversation.

It seems like the right-wingers are going to voat, and the left-wingers are going to Snapzu and to a lesser extent Hubski. Reddit really did feel a bit like being in a prison-gang war sometimes.

I'll try to get the badacademics crowd to spend time over here too, if I can. That would enrich Snapzu a lot.

Don't forget /r/conspiracy and most of the Free Speech Warriors. Since they already have an established community on voat, the people moving to other Reddit alternatives are the ones who are the opposite of those people.
