Short of understanding the language spoken, subtitles really are the next best thing to enjoy movies in foreign languages. Even if you don't get the spoken words, you do get the tones and emotions conveyed in their voices. This can't always be rendered the same by an actor standing in a recording room (instead of in the middle of the action). Sometimes, the sonority of the voices also account for a part of the enjoyment.

Keep the dubbing for animated works.
