M14 (NGC 6402)
Globular cluster in Ophiuchus

M14 is 30,000 light years away, 100 light years across, about 13 billion years old and comprised of a few hundred thousand stars of which 70 are variables. There was a nova in M14 in 1938 and a carbon star was discovered in 1997.
