We consume massive amounts of probiotics and drive out to the free-range / grass-fed farm to buy fresh lamb hearts but... we also have an amazingly powerful dishwasher :(
Could they make a pill full of all the germs and animal waste kids need, or do I actually have to start eating off of dirty plates?!
you could just let your kids reuse dishes a few times before they are washed. I don't have kids, but that's what I do. However, my excuse is that I live in a dry cabin. Dry = no plumbing.
A well or other source of water would be a top priority for me. Not sure where you are at but there are many potential options if you are able to purify the water yourself. If there is a river or significant amount of rain you could collect it and run it through a a big berkey.
well right now, our electricity is provided by a generator charging a battery bank. I would like to have a quieter, more renewable source of electricity, so that is our #1 priority... followed by a well.
we collect loads of rainwater for our garden though.

Do you at least have a well and a pump?
not yet, that's in our plans for summer 2016. This summer's plan is to get solar.
You haul it in or boil stream water or what?
I haul water in 5 gallon containers. I have to go pick up ~30 gallons today that should last for about 2 weeks.
Wow...
Must be some good exercise!

In some states collecting rainwater is actually illegal!
I think I might try this!
