It makes sense to me as I will always remember the colour of a book, not necessarily where I left it on the shelf, I probably have over a thousand books so only having to search one block of colour would make life easier.
The idea of buying books in bulk purely as filler strikes me as a bit pretentious.
That may work for a personal collection that nobody else uses or is there as decoration and it may look organized on a purely superficial basis but I wouldn't choose to do it.
