I did as well. It's sort of like what happened to Turning,but he ended up WAY worse.
Sounds like he was amazingly humble despite all of this. I have heard of this before... "popular" scientists, like Carl Sagan, have kind of a stigma in the scientific community where they aren't taken as seriously as they were before.
