Wow, this is amazing! If they separate from Spain, they will no longer be part of the EU, but then again, neither is Switzerland and it's one of the best countries to live in Europe due to the quality of life, rent per capita, low unemployment rate, government transparency,... it seems that they don't need to be part of the European Union to do quite well.

Here's what I'd do if I were Rajoy (which he'll never do, of course):

- Grant independence to Catalonia.

- Every time they attempt to join the EU, vote against it. They can't join without Spain's vote.

- Impose very high tariffs on Catalan products to be sold in Spain (which is by far their largest customer).

- Wait for their begging to come back and then give them the finger.

As a Spaniard, I'm very tired of hearing how Catalans think that they're better than everyone else. Why shouldn't Galicians, Aragonians, Riojans, Basques, Castilians, Leonians, etc. be independent too? What makes Catalonian culture so special and unique that they are above all the others' cultures? I think they need to go fuck themselves with their small and much more painful Brexit to learn that they aren't the cream of the crop.
