Typically because we are an instant gratification society. We don't wait and save up like past generations. Instead we charge it and deal with the cost later. Not setting a good financial setting for our kids, it may be hard for them to break the cycle too.
I am not advocating for purchasing any of Dave Ramsey's "stuff", but from personal experience I can tell you it has worked for me. It takes commitment and a firm plan to attack the debt but it is possible to work your way out of serious financial trouble using his methods. I am sure other methodologies also will work but his is the only plan I have personally used.
