My Grandpa had a service dog in his unit. These dogs were trained to kill and function in a specific capacity. They were not pets. My Grandpa said that you did not try to pet or socialize with them at all because they were extremely aggressive. They likely would not have survived being introduced to a normal life in a household after the war ended.
I love dogs. I have two and have grown up with them my entire life. Ideally, these dogs would have never been put into combat. However, euthanizing them after their experiences in combat was likely the best outcome for everyone (including the dogs).
