“I think it speaks to the culture that we are raising our kids in, that kids at one of the most prestigious schools - not just in our state, but in our country - could plan and execute this and not apologize for it,” Young said. “This is about more than just the birds.”

If you're rich, you can do whatever you want, and don't have to apologize for anything. We're in a society that values money above everything else.

I have had the luck to live in varied societies. Most do not choose to live in a society that you describe, nor would they intentionally build one like that. Having said that, we allow a society to develop. We adapt to a society constructed by what? Well, that is the question.

I was thinking of the US, since (for now) I live here.

The thing is, once you say that the pursuit of wealth is what drives society, you're making money the ultimate goal, superseding everything else. I tend to think of money as a vehicle to achieve meaningful objectives, but it seems that American society sees money as a goal by itself, and measures success almost exclusively in terms of money. Science, education, health, honor, all the other things that many societies value (or have valued in history) for their own worth, have become subordinates to money. You can buy all of them, so they're clearly inferior.

          China is even worse.

Sure, but China doesn't pretend to be a Democratic Society Leading the Way of the Free Peoples of the World.

Maybe it would be simpler if the US government took off the mask and admitted that they're no better than Russia or China. In fact, I can think of a number of ways they are worse, but I'm the evil undemocratic guy here, so I'll leave it at that.
