Maybe I'm being a bit pedantic, but I believe the most commonly accepted theory is that there is some extraterrestrial life out there. The universe is so monumentally massive that, probability-wise, it would be almost inconceivable to say that there wasn't, that we were the only ones. However, the idea that we'd ever encounter any...well that's probably wishful thinking. It's extremely unlikely that any such life form is anywhere close to us in terms of the distance we can currently travel/communicate. They would be lightyears and lightyears and lightyears away from us. There's a decent Into the Universe episode with Stephen Hawking that covers a similar topic early in the episode.
