If you want freedom, every once in a while you have to fight for it. Standing in front of a building with a candle in your hand won't do.

When I was a student and had the energy for this the choice was usually rocks, Molotov cocktails, and burning buses. But it doesn't have to be that.
The people in the government are not stupid, they know very well that they're staging a self-coup. This is a pivotal moment. Let's say they decide next that elections are not needed because they're awesome, what will stop them?
Sounds messy. When shit is getting real, you stick to what you know, what you trust. For most Portlanders, that means pitchforks and torches, but then it's a very clean city. Burning tires, effective at constraining even treaded vehicles, would be more common if they could be more readily lit in the rain.
