While I think that higher education makes for a better, more informed populace, I'm not sure how I feel about this. There are a lot of people who go to college to get a degree and then don't know what to do with it. This has resulted in a significant number of people who are under-employed or overqualified for the jobs they can find. Because of that, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with taxpayer money subsidizing college education.
The way I look at it, yes free college will tend to saturate the market with graduates which will in turn lead to more competition and fewer job opportunities for any one individual. But I think that's better than a situation in which some people don't even have the opportunity to get a degree in the first place.
Can anyone talk about the quality of community colleges in Oregon?
