Well, I can tell you: if I don't floss for a few days, the first couple of times I do it afterwards my gums bleed. So it's making them stronger somehow. At least against floss.
isn't that the definition of a callus? It doesn't necessarily mean that your gums are stronger, just that they are subject to a lot of friction and develop a hard/thick spot.
Lodged food particles promote tooth decay. All that needs said.
