Is there absolutely no company or organization that can step up and take away their monopoly? At this point ICANN is a joke that bends over backwards for the MPAA and the like.
I was under the impression that domain privacy options were just to stop unwanted solicitation of "I want to buy your domain for $50 lolz" and so on. I thought that if the police or via court order required the information it was freely available. Seems I was wrong and the privacy was a little more tighter than I thought. Personally I've only got a few domains that have privacy settings on, but that's to stop any form of hostility reaching me from people wanting to poach the domain.
