I'd like to point out again that Hugo Chavez was elected running as a candidate from his own party, not the previous duopoly.
Seeing the Dems and Reps sink is satisfying, but with a divided electorate that is extremely vulnerable to populist rhetoric, a third party candidate winning could be even worse.
Or, as the campaign manager for John McCain and Sarah Palin said after they'd safely lost the election, "there are worse things than losing." Seems like it's worth pointing out that even though Chavez may've come up through traditional Venezuelan party politics, he won and won soundly by appealing to a broad ethnicity that he and he alone was able to properly betray.
