New NOAA images show El Niño and 'The Blob' in stark relief
The side-by-side images from 1997 and July 2015 by the agency's Environmental Visualization Laboratory show a broad swath of warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures extending from the mid-Pacific at the equator to the coast of South America.
