Cross platform messaging apps

This is a pretty lame question but what's your favorite cross platform messaging app? I've searched but most of them are compromised in some way. Whatsapp costs money after the first year? It's cheap, but the problem is that I can't expect my family and friends to use it just to suit me. Skype, for me, is incredibly slow and laggy and notifications are very unreliable. facebook messenger requires a facebook account. Google hangouts doesn't seem to be a thing on windows phone. Telegram seems nice so far, but one problem I have with it is that it lacks voice calling which is present in whatsapp. Any other ideas?

Facebook messenger no longer requires a Facebook account and I use it often! ^_^

A Facebook account is no longer necessary to use its Messenger applications, at least in North America and a select few countries.

My country is not one of the select few :c Why facebook? Whyyyyyyyyyy!?

I'm sure support is coming, whatever solution you have will probably be temporary, I doubt facebook isn't working on bringing this global. ALSO, Voxer is lots of fun to play with, with friends and family, check that one out :P

Telegram Messenger Beta has actually been working very well for me. It's available on Windows desktop, Mac Os, Android, ios, WindowsPhone and through a browser, so very cross platform. So far no issues with stability or other faults, I highly recommend it.

I'm really liking telegram, it's fast and works well. I was using the google chrome app for it but now I'm using the one for windows desktop and it's so much nicer! Thank you!
