In Boon for Big Pharma, TTIP Would Lock In High Drug Prices

As E.U. and U.S. officials meet in New York this week for the 15th round of Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations, a new report warns of how the corporate-friendly, increasingly unpopular deal could "lock in" high drug prices and "help entrench a broken medical innovation system." Specifically, the analysis explains how expanding intellectual property rules and monopoly protections for medicines, which the TTIP seeks to do, is counterproductive at a time when E.U. member states and the U.S. "are facing a looming access to medicines crisis."

France to call for an end to EU-US free trade talks

Talks over the hugely controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the EU and the US are in danger as France pushes for an end to negotiations and a German minister says they have failed. French President Francois Hollande on Tuesday became the latest European leader to speak out against the free trade agreement, saying talks would not meet their deadline. Earlier on Tuesday, France's chief negotiator, minister of state for trade Matthias Fekl, had said that Paris would request in September that the European Commission stop negotiations on the trade deal.

TTIP has officially failed, according to one of the key officials negotiating it

The free trade negotiations between the European Union and the United States have failed, but “nobody is really admitting it”, Germany's Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel has said. Talks over the so-called Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, also known as TTIP, have made little progress in recent years. The 14th round of negotiations between American and EU officials took place in Brussels in July. It was the third round in six months.

    These documents could kill TTIP

Hundreds of leaked pages from the controversial Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) show that the deal could be about to collapse, according to campaigners. The huge leak – which gives the first full insight into the negotiations – shows that the relationship between Europe and the US are weaker than had been thought and that major divisions remain on some of the agreement’s most central provisions.

Thousands of Germans Protest TTIP Trade Deal Before Obama Visit

Thousands of opponents of a proposed transatlantic trade deal poured onto German streets on Saturday ahead of a visit by U.S. President Barack Obama. A coalition of trade unions, environmentalists and consumer protection groups gathered in front of Hanover’s opera house ahead of a march through the city center expected to draw around 50,000 people. Protesters held signs reading “Don’t Give TTIP a Chance”, featuring the image of a bull tagged “privatization” and a cow branded “democracy”.
