'The Witcher' Showrunner Says Netflix Series Will Never Adapt the Video Games

Netflix’s “The Witcher” is best known in the U.S. for the series of role playing video games by CD Projekt Red rather than the fantasy novels by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski that inspired the games. But if the show ever moves past the story laid out in the books like “Game of Thrones” did, Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich says fans should definitely not expect it to mine the games for material.

The Entirety Of Witcher III Will Be Squeezed Onto A Single Switch Cartridge

Metro 2033 Author Calls The Witcher's Andrzej Sapkowski An "Old Fool"

Oh my! It seems two experts of the written word will have a war of words of their own. The first shot comes from Dmitry Glukhovsky, author of the Metro 2033 series of novels. Glukhovsky slammed the author of The Witcher series, Andrzej Sapkowski, for the latter’s recent demand of $16 million from CD Projekt Red. Among the criticisms Glukhovsky dished out were that the brains behind The Witcher novels was an “old fool” and that he’s “an ungrateful schmuck.” The video interview below is entirely in Russian but we’ll give a short transcript of the juicy bits.

Henry Cavill Will Lead Netflix's Witcher Series as Geralt of Rivia

The Witcher has found its, err, Witcher—in none other than DC’s Man of Steel himself, Henry Cavill. Netflix’s Witcher series—showrun by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and based on the fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, rather than the wildly popular video game adaptations by CD Projekt Red—has been quietly bubbling away in the background for the last year or so...

Casting about to begin for THE WITCHER TV series

To protect from spoilers, the production team has written all-new scenes for the characters that won't be part of the TV series itself. However, the notes confirm that Geralt, Yennefer and Jaskier will be among the roles being cast. Also of interest is that Geralt's bard companion will be called "Jaskier" rather than the more frequent English translation of "Dandelion," the name by which he is known in the video games and some of the English translations of the books.

Enhanced Edition Mod for Witcher III Offers Total Overhaul of Combat

CD Projekt Red has released numerous patches and updates to improve The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. The 1.61 update, released recently, implemented HDR support for the PS4 Pro. While that update also had some bugs, the company is already working on another patch to fix the issue. However, most of CD Projekt Red’s updates have focused on graphical improvements. Some fans of the game have long been working on a mod of their own, entitled the “Enhanced Edition,” which aims at completely reworking the game’s combat system.

CD Projekt Red Will "Probably" Return to World of The Witcher - It Just Won't Be The Witcher 4

CD Projekt Red still isn't planning to make a Witcher 4, but that doesn't mean it won't make games set in the same universe. Speaking to Strefa Inwestorow (and translated by IGN Poland), CD Projekt CEO Adam Kiciński explained that while the company sees Geralt's Witcher trilogy as definitively finished, the company still owns the IP.

Sapkowski - who does not profit from the game series - will serve as a creative consultant on the series. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories," he explained in a press release, "staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."

Meeting Andrzej Sapkowski, the writer who created The Witcher

Andrzej Sapkowski has something of a reputation. To start with, he's a big deal. He invented Geralt, witchers, Triss, Ciri, the whole thing - it all came out of his head. He has won awards and his work is revered, especially in Poland. More than once I've heard him described as the Polish Tolkien. But I've also heard he can be difficult - and I'm on my way to meet him. "Good luck Robert. He is not the most pleasant person in the world…" one Twitter follower warns. "Good luck, you're gonna need it," says another.

It’s been a little over a year since The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt was released, but CD Projekt Red is still riding high thanks to the adventures of Geralt of Rivia. Over the weekend, the company released its first-half financial report for 2016, and while its profits are slightly down year-over-year, its value on the Polish stock market is now $1 billion, thanks to the combined power of The Witcher 3 and Gog.com.

'The Witcher 3' And 'Fallout 4' Show Us That Single-Player Games Should Live Forever

It’s about that time where everyone starts to compile their Game of the Year lists. There are a few last minute additions to be considered (Rainbow Six: Siege, Just Cause 3, Xenoblade Chronicles X), but I think most have come up with many of their top picks already. It’s likely that many GOTY lists will include Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3 somewhere near the top. And I think that’s a significant achievement, given that we now exist in an age...
