New Mario: Nintendo re-invents a gaming icon
From the opening of the trailer for "Super Mario Odyssey" -- which saw the mustachioed plumber burst from a manhole in a city resembling New York -- it was clear that change was coming. The latest installment of the gaming industry's best-selling franchise, out Friday on Nintendo Switch, marks a sharp departure from recent outings. Seeing Nintendo's pudgy mascot walk among realistic-looking humans twice his size (but with smaller heads) will be jarring to some.

‘It’s Simply Bursting With Creative Wonder,’ Says Reviewer Of New Game Where Mario Sometimes Dresses As Chef
Lavishing praise on Nintendo for its fresh and inspired design, a reviewer declared Thursday that a new game in which Mario sometimes dresses as a chef is “simply bursting with creative wonder.” “Every moment of this delightful adventure is overflowing with wildly innovative ideas that take the franchise in a bold new direction,” said video game critic Derek Tillman of the newly released platformer where Mario periodically dons a chef’s hat, jacket, and apron, and can wield a whisk as a weapon.

Super Mario Odyssey Review - A New Era - GameRevolution
There's never been a Mario game quite like Super Mario Odyssey. Though it adopts the open, non-linear level design of Mario 64 and adapts it into grandiose environments akin to Super Mario Galaxy, this is as fresh as the series has felt in years, and much like Breath of the Wild it's evidence of Nintendo's newfound confidence in its Switch era of games. As a huge fan of the series for over two decades, I can safely say that it's in contention for the best Mario game to date.

Confirmed: Mario Was Originally Punching Yoshi
Among Nintendo fans, there has been dispute as to whether Mario was telling Yoshi to get something or smacking the character in the head. According to Nintendo, Mario was originally punching Yoshi, causing the character’s tongue to shoot out in surprise. For example, a few years back website Supper Mario Broth tried to disprove the Mario-is-punching-Yoshi theory with the images below, explaining that “Yoshi contorts his face before Mario’s hand overlaps his head” and that “official art suggests Mario is simply pointing forward to show Yoshi what to lick.”

'Super Mario Run' Update With New Levels and Character Out Now, IAP on Sale for $4.99
Amidst all of the speculation over whether the game was a financial success, as well as Nintendo's later mobile and console achievements in 2017, the fact that Super Mario Run [Free] was actually an incredibly enjoyable arcade runner has become a bit obscured. Why Artificial Intelligence Researchers Love 'Super Mario Bros.'
Super Mario Bros. is without question one of the finest video games of all time. Its game mechanics, physics, and challenges all form a cohesive experience that has kept gamers smashing goombas for decades. It’s damn near perfect. But in recent years, the plump plumber has found a new purpose beyond pure entertainment; for some, it is also a test bed for artificial intelligence research.

“Super Mario Maker” is an engine for circulating horrible new “Mario” levels
"Super Mario Maker” is a bad comedy. Released in coordination with the 30-year anniversary of “Super Mario Bros.,” it indulges players in the fantasy that they’d be good at making video game levels. This sort of self-deception has become common in the age of digital consumption, and while there’s something utopian in “Super Mario Maker’s” appeals to community participation and sharing, the game quickly collapses into a scratch sheet of...
