We’ve all been living in a “South Park” episode for the past few years.

Weed sales are skyrocketing and socially distanced classrooms are in session: The COVID pandemic comes to South Park when Comedy Central’s long-running animated series returns Sept. 30.

If you’ve been wondering why Comedy Central landed on the “#CancelSouthPark” approach to promoting the 22nd season of South Park, perhaps this new teaser will illuminate things a little bit. The season-premiere episode, which is slated to air this Wednesday, has a fairly unassuming log line (“Randy is desperate to help Sharon get her emotions under control and Cartman unexpectedly fails his math test”), but as this teaser reveals, there’s a little more to the episode that might qualify it for the whole #CancelSouthPark approach.

South Park is back for its 21st season and the show has its sights set on the white nationalist movement that has made recent headlines. The new season of the cartoon premieres Wednesday with the episode "White People Renovating Houses."

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are two of the greatest creative minds on the planet. They redefined the adult cartoon genre with their now 20-year-old (and still going strong) creation South Park, have an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, won a slew of Tony awards for Book of Mormon, and have done it pretty much all their own way. That scabrous cartoon has been a one-stop shop for anti-partisan satire and blasphemy on Comedy Central since 1997. Few comedies can stay first-rate for that long. (Sorry, Homer.) Early in the current season, the show’s 19th, the creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone seem to wonder how well the show’s offend-at-all-costs ethos has aged. “It’s like I’m a relic,” a recurring character says.

Viacom, the parent company of Nick, MTV, and Comedy Central, insists it's still relevant. No one else thinks so.

Last week we got the good news that @midnight had been renewed on Comedy Central for a third season, and the hype caused one announcement to completely slip through the cracks: South Park got extended for another three seasons, too!
