Apple's fight with Europe over USB-C is a losing battle — as it should be
Officials within the European Union are hoping to mandate charging standards, and Apple, predictably, isn’t happy about it. Under a floated European Commission proposal, USB-C would become the only standard for wired smartphone charging, since proprietary formats like Apple’s Lightning prevent people from reusing cables and many other accessories. In fact, the initiative would cover more than just phones — headphones, portable speakers, and tablets are just some of the other targeted devices.

Apple sued by Chinese students over iPhone’s lack of cables
A group of Chinese students is suing Apple for not providing a charger with the iPhone. Apple stopped shipping power adapters with new iPhones in 2020, claiming that it would reduce carbon emissions. However, students in Beiking and Shanghai have reportedly challenged this argument in court, according to Vice and the Shanghai Law Journal, arguing that the USB-C to Lightning cable that came with the iPhone 12 was not compatible with other chargers on the market. As such, the students were not able to charge their phone as advertised.

Cracking the code of unbreakable phone screens
Unbreakable phone screens might seem too good to be true, but some chemical engineers reckon they’ve cracked the secret, developing a new material that combines glass with nanocrystals to make a resilient screen that would produce high-quality images in phones, LEDs and computers. The iPhone 13: An upgrader’s guide
When it comes to iPhone upgrades, Apple is incremental. So are iPhone reviews. Those of us who review iPhones are, for understandable reasons, focused on what’s new between this year’s model and the last. The problem is that most people don’t buy a new iPhone every year. The primary upgraders to the iPhone 13 will be coming from the iPhone 7, or 8, or X, or XS, or XR. For them, several years of Apple innovations will be rolled into a single purchase. But reviews of the new iPhones will not address what happened in 2018, or 2019, or 2020.

Why I'm skipping the iPhone 13 and keeping my iPhone 12 Pro
Apple just took the wraps off of the new iPhone 13 series, which promise the fastest iPhone performance yet, up to two and a half hours more battery life, new cinematic video options and a twice-as-smooth display on the Pro models. But as someone who just plunked down a bunch of cash on last year’s iPhone 12 Pro, those upgrades aren’t enough for me to make the switch just yet. And, even for those coming from an especially old phone, last year’s model just became an even better value.
