The Sand Castle / Le château de sable (1977)

An absolutely gorgeous stop-motion short available to watch in it's entirety on the nfb.ca website. The film features the sandman and the creatures he sculpts out of sand. Together they build a castle and celebrate the completion of their new home, only to be interrupted by an uninvited guest. Cleverly constructed with nuance, the film leaves interpretation open to the viewer. It took home a well deserved Oscar for Best Animated Short in 1977. I highly recommend watching this one in 1080p.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (2011)

After a hurricane levels his city, a young man wanders into a mysterious library where books literally come to life. Using a variety of techniques (miniatures, computer animation, 2D animation) award winning author/ illustrator William Joyce and Co-director Brandon Oldenburg present a new narrative experience that harkens back to silent films and M-G-M Technicolor musicals. “Morris Lessmore” is old fashioned and cutting edge at the same time.
