Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Fold: more than just a concept

Two months after an announcement where Samsung talked about the Galaxy Fold but didn’t allow anybody to actually touch it, we finally got our hands on it today. The $1,980 device begins shipping on April 26th, but it will likely be in very limited quantities. Here’s the TL;DR most of you are waiting for: it feels much more stable and polished than I expected going in, but there is still some work to be done on the software.

Samsung is treating U.S. unlocked device owners like second-rate citizens

When spending $1000+ directly with Samsung for an unlocked smartphone, the experience shouldn’t be worse than a carrier version.

Samsung India now shows you the price of spare parts to quickly get repair estimates

For a modern flagship smartphone to be competitive in today’s market, it needs to have all the latest features. Be it dual-frequency GNSS or every feature added in Bluetooth 5, there’s a lot for manufacturers to consider. This abundance of features can make smartphones difficult to repair as the number of parts increases. More parts mean more potential for breakage. In a move to possibly counter this, Samsung has listed replacement costs for key parts of its smartphones on its website.

Samsung confirms it's merging Galaxy J line into the Galaxy A line

If you’re out in the market, buying or just checking out Samsung’s smartphones, the variety and the vastness in the range of products can be intimidating. The South Korean giant has a smartphone for every pocket and need. While the Galaxy S and the Note series – being at the top-end – generate most of the interest, the Galaxy J series hold a large share of the budget segment in markets such as India, Latin America, parts of Europe, etc. due to its affordable pricing. However, a continued beating in fast-growing markets has prompted Samsung to launch a new Galaxy M series and revamp the Galaxy A series, as well as to ax the older J series.

Seven years ago today, Samsung beat Nokia to become global #1 OEM

Nokia had enjoyed 14 years as the number one global cell phone maker. The Finnish company’s phones were ubiquitous throughout the late 90s and 2000s, but the rise of the smartphone era would see it stumble. By the end of the first quarter of 2012, Samsung had charged ahead of its rival in global smartphone shipments, and Nokia would continue to nosedive thereafter.

Galaxy Fold User Complains About Crease and Poor User Experience

One leaker who claims to have gotten their hands on the new Samsung Galaxy Fold has shared some important details on what we can expect, and they sound pretty troubling for a $1,980 phone. Speaking to Samsung-tracking site SamMobile today (Mar. 27), the leaker notes that the Galaxy Fold will not fold completely flat. When the device is in its folded state, according to the leaker, there's a larger gap near the hinge than at the ends. The person likened the look to that of a binder.

The Samsung Galaxy S10’s Price Has Dropped $225 Already

Historically, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy prices start dropping about 30 to 40 percent six months after its launch. But as redditor MrRoyce points out, you can get a Galaxy S10 with a $225 discount in Europe right now. MrRoyce has been tracking the price of the Galaxy S10 with 128GB in Germany since the phone first launched. Like he points out, price drops are normal after a few months. All Samsung Galaxy Fold variants will ship with a Snapdragon 855 processor

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold, it wasn't specific about the device's processor and merely said it would be a 7nm one. Since the American Galaxy S10 variant features the 7nm Snapdragon 855 SoC, this could have meant the larger handset would ship with the same processor. International S10 models come with Samsung's 8nm Exynos 9820 chip...

Foldable phones are about to make the US very jealous

The US is falling behind on phone design, and foldables are the proof. This year’s Mobile World Congress was full of foldables, from Huawei’s sleek Mate X to Xiaomi’s triple-folding model to TCL’s angular DragonHinge design to Oppo’s prototype to the clunky Royale FlexPai to LG’s sort-of-cheating V50 second screen. But all of those devices have one thing in common: like the last few waves of innovative phone designs released overseas, they won’t be available in America in any meaningful way.

Samsung is working on making the entire front of its phones a screen, with no need for bezels or a camera cutout of any kind. Yonhap News Agency reports that the company’s vice president of its display R&D group, Yang Byung-duk, said that “though it wouldn’t be possible to make (a full-screen smartphone) in the next 1-2 years, the technology can move forward to the point where the camera hole will be invisible, while not affecting the camera’s function in any way.”

Right now, you can fool it with a video of yourself played back on another phone, or even just a photo. In at least one case, even siblings have been able to trick it.

Samsung Galaxy Buds review: imperfectly acceptable

When I was in high school, shopping for new earphones with a single £20 note as my budget, I used to dream of earbuds without the wire. It wasn’t a complicated fantasy, just my ultra basic Sony buds sans fil, as the French would put it. It took a decade and a half, but in 2016, candidates like the Bragi Dash and Apple’s AirPods started surfacing, each of them embodying some sort of physical compromise to accommodate a battery, speaker, and wireless radio into the same tiny enclosure.
