26th December 1966 - Jimi Hendrix writes “Purple Haze”
Hendrix moved to England in 1966 and teamed up with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The group scored an almost immediate UK hit with “Hey Joe,” which was released in mid-December. It was 10 days later, however, on December 26, 1966, that Hendrix wrote “Purple Haze”—the song that would not only give him his breakthrough hit in the United States, but also go on to define an entire musical era.

Mortiis - Parasite God
I'm sure there's a proper genre term for this music, but for me it's a fantastical, synthy song that conjures images of the Black Cauldron and the sketchy dark fantasy novels I'd sneak from the shelf to read. The strange video is bonus.

How David BowieAvoided the Cliché of the Aging Rock Star
Bowie managed to resist the cult of youth that later trapped Mick Jagger and others of their generation. Is there a readier figure of fun in our culture than the aging rock star? The SoulCycle instructor and the urban farmer are more au courant targets. But not so long ago, during the Clinton presidency, before the jokes simply ran out, there was no better butt than the Rolling Stones embarking on yet another reunion tour.

"This whole industry f**king sucks and this little get-together you guys have here is like a private boys' club ... it's a bunch of jackasses and jerks and f**king gangsters and crooks who've f**king stolen everything from a f**king artist telling the artist to come out here and tap dance."

Bastille - Pompeii
The video follows Bastille frontman Dan Smith, as he wanders about an empty-looking Los Angeles, before realizing the few people around all have unnatural vacant black eyes. He steals a car and drives into the desert to escape them, but the car breaks down and he soon realizes he's been infected as well. He climbs a mountain and looks out at the view, before turning around to reveal his own eyes meanwhile have turned black as well. The story is an allegory for the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii.
