The last of 33 miners trapped nearly half a mile underground for more than two months at a caved-in mine in northern Chile, are rescued. The miners survived longer than anyone else trapped underground in recorded history.

Five rescued in Tanzania after 41 days trapped in gold mine
Five people were rescued after spending 41 days trapped by a landslide in a small-scale gold mine in northwest Tanzania and one body was recovered, the mining ministry said on Tuesday. The incident occurred at Kahama district, Shinyanga region, near the licensed Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi gold mines, which are owned by Acacia Mining Ltd, formerly African Barrick Gold Plc.

They had no choice but to swim. The three men had left just hours earlier when a large wave capsized their 19-foot skiff on Monday night. They swam through two miles of dark water before finding salvation: the tiny Pacific Island of Fanadik, several hundred miles north of Papua New Guinea. For three days, the men remained stranded on the uninhabited island, hoping for help.

Italian avalanche: hope for survivors after three puppies found alive in rubble
Rescuers have recovered three puppies from under the rubble of an Italian mountain hotel that was hit by an avalanche five days ago, raising fresh hopes that some of the 22 people still missing could be found alive. Firefighter Fabio Jerman said the discovery of the three shaggy white Abruzzo sheepdog pups meant there were still air pockets in the collapsed building – “an important sign of life, which gives us hope,” he said. But as light began to fade, the body of a woman was recovered from the rubble, bringing the number of the dead to seven.

Dramatic rescue saves 7 horses from icy death in frozen-over slough
Firefighters near Grande Prairie, Alta., used their specialized training to rescue 10 frantic horses that broke through an ice-covered slough on Sunday. Dramatic video shows how firefighters saved the horses, three of which later died from the ordeal. The herd had wandered onto the ice before falling through, said Trevor Grant, regional fire chief in the County of Grande Prairie.

Wild elephant saved in dramatic rescue
Officials in the Indian state of Uttarakhand have saved a wild elephant from drowning in the Ganges river. Forest guards at Rajaji Tiger Reserve near Rishikesh found the elephant stuck at one of the barrages on the river early on Thursday. They diverted water to reduce the river level, allowing the male elephant to swim to safety.

Guatemala ends search for volcano victims with 200 still missing
Guatemala has ended its search for victims in the zone that suffered the most deaths and injuries from the Fuego volcano eruption, its disaster agency said. At least 110 people died and 197 are still missing after violent eruptions that began two weeks ago, according to disaster agency CONRED.
