'We told you so,' Eastern Europe tells Germany

Influential politicians across Eastern Europe have pointed to the Cologne attacks, in which men of Middle Eastern appearance allegedly sexually assaulted over a hundred women, as proof that Germany’s open-door refugee policy has been a mistake. As Chancellor Angela Merkel seeks to reach a consensus on a quota system, whereby refugees would be divided up among European countries, the mood in Eastern Europe has now hardened against...

New Charlie Hebdo cartoon suggests dead 3-year-old refugee Alan Kurdi would have become sexual attacker

In hindsight, the death of Alan Kurdi, a 3-year-old Syrian refugee who washed up on a Turkish shore after the boat he was in sank, may mark the high point in European public sympathy for refugees. The widespread reports that refugees and migrants were involved in mass sexual assaults in Cologne and other European cities on New Year's Eve could well be its nadir. Now the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo has attempted to marry the two moments...

10,000,000 More Asylum Seekers Heading To Europe, German Official Warns

The massive surge of refugees in Europe hailing from the Middle East and Africa has barely scratched the surface for the number of asylum seekers who will come to the continent, a German politician warned Monday, the Express reported. It is the European Union's fault that as many as 10 million more will come to Europe because its countries' borders have not been regulated, the German development minister said, pointing in part to the...

A man who tried to attack a Paris police station last week had lived in a centre for asylum seekers in Germany, German investigators said, a finding likely to fuel criticism of Chancellor Angela Merkel's liberal stance towards war refugees. The man was shot dead by French police on Thursday after he tried to storm the police station in northern Paris, brandishing a meat cleaver and wearing a fake suicide vest.

Cities of Tomorrow: Refugee Camps Require Longer-Term Thinking

Former mayor of the world’s second-largest refugee camp, humanitarian Kilian Kleinschmidt notes “the average stay today in a camp is 17 years. That’s a generation.” These places need to be recognized as what they are: “cities of tomorrow,” not the temporary spaces we like to imagine. “In the Middle East, we were building camps: storage facilities for people. But the refugees were building a city,” Kleinschmidt said in an interview.

How easy is it to buy a fake Syrian passport?

Forgers in the Middle East are offering fake Syrian passports for as little as $250, days after it emerged that one of the Paris bombers may have entered Europe using false Syrian paperwork. The development raises fears over the potential security threat posed by tens of thousands of asylum seekers arriving in Greece every week, and will amplify calls to provide them with secure and legal routes to safety.

What Americans thought of Jewish refugees on the eve of World War II

The results of the poll illustrated above by the useful Twitter account @HistOpinion were published in the pages of Fortune magazine in July 1938. Fewer than 5 percent of Americans surveyed at the time believed that the United States should raise its immigration quotas or encourage political refugees fleeing fascist states in Europe — the vast majority of whom were Jewish — to voyage across the Atlantic.
