Portugal gets a new government, but probably not for long
Portugal's center-right coalition government began preparing its return to power Friday, but it appeared doomed to a brief mandate as anti-austerity parties vowed to bring it down in the new Parliament's first vote. Incumbent Prime Minister Pedro Passos Coelho started composing his new Cabinet a day after the country's president invited him to form a government following victory in an Oct. 4 general election. The government is expected to be sworn in next week.

Old Traditions, New Pastures
I accompanied a flock of sheep and goats from the region of Seia during the first three days of ascent, living alongside some of the last shepherds who preserve this ancient tradition. Modern-day shepherds may have mobile phones to keep in touch with family and friends, but their lifestyle has changed little for centuries.

Weed, cocaine, heroin, you name it — Portugal decided to treat possession and use of small quantities of these drugs as a public health issue, not a criminal one.
