Prosecutors say three young children in rural Pennsylvania are lucky to be alive after police recently rescued them from a locked room in their home where they’d allegedly been kept for three months — wasting away — with no heat and little food. “The door to the room was locked from the outside and the paint on the wall was peeled off at the height of the kids,” Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico tells PEOPLE. “We theorize they’d been peeling it off in order to eat it.”

Mom donates 18.5 gallons of breast milk after newborn son dies
A grieving mother whose son died only 11 days after birth resolved to donate as much breast milk as she could, which wound up totaling 2,370 ounces. Ariel Matthews gave birth to son Ronan in October and documented his story on Instagram. The posts revealed Matthews had a miscarriage and a stillbirth last year, after which she also donated breast milk.

The vast majority of parents of overweight children in England do not recognise the fact, the annual NHS health survey has found, raising fears that high levels of obesity have normalised unhealthy weights. Educators, health care providers and researchers have known for some time that low socioeconomic status is connected to poor health, including in children, but a new study led by a San Francisco State University psychologist has shed light on what can be done to protect young people from negative outcomes. The keys?
