I've always wanted to try this game...
There are a lot of great resources out there to get your feet wet. The Lazy Newb Pack gives you everything you need to get the game running (and a few handy extras, like a graphical tileset rather than the intimidating default ASCII graphics), and captnduck's video tutorials, while a bit outdated now, still hold up well for learning the basics of the game. And of course, the wiki.
Remember, losing is FUN!
