A newly discovered moon tunnel could be the perfect place for a colony, scientists say
At the close of the Apollo age, a year before the final moonwalk in 1972, a NASA researcher argued that vast tunnels lie beneath the lunar surface. There was good reason to think so. Lava from ancient volcanoes might have bored miles-long voids beneath the moon's surface, just as volcanoes carved out the Kaumana lava tubes in Hawaii.

NASA joins a host of nations and companies that want to go to the lunar surface
Earlier this month, Vice President Mike Pence made NASA’s new goal clear: the space agency is tasked with sending humans to the surface of the Moon again, this time to create a foundation for deep space missions. Though it’s unclear exactly how the administration plans to pull this off, the new mission is a big change for NASA, which has been focused on going to Mars without a return to the lunar surface.

Engineers Want Gamers to Explore the Moon with a Remote-Controlled Nanobot
The last couple centuries have been hard for explorers. Humans have visited almost all of the places on Earth a thousand times over at this point, and it can feel like there's just nowhere to go that's completely new, fresh, and unexplored. But soon, would-be explorers will be able to use a robot to explore the next frontier—the Moon.

'The Martian' author Andy Weir is convinced we'll colonize the moon — but says colonizing Mars doesn't make any sense
Andy Weir, author of "The Martian", a realistic tale of survival in space, is about to release his second and highly anticipated novel, "Artemis"."Artemis" takes place on the moon in the 2080s at humanity's first and only lunar city of the same name. It's a riveting story about a high-stakes lunar heist featuring Jasmine "Jazz" Bashara, a Saudi-born woman and witty smuggler who has lived inside the aluminum bubbles of Artemis since she was a kid.

Five firms aim to power moon-orbiting way station to deep space
NASA has awarded contracts to five companies to start researching how to power its proposed Deep Space Gateway, a way station that may one day orbit the moon and serve as a launch pad for flights to deep space. This crewed space station is key to NASA’s plans for future missions to Mars and beyond. The agency awarded contracts totalling about $2.4 million to Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Orbital ATK, Sierra Nevada Space Systems and Space Systems Loral.

Something very weird is happening on Saturn’s moon Titan
Thanks to the efforts of NASA and its incredibly reliable Cassini spacecraft, we now know more about Saturn and its moons than ever before, but it seems there are still some surprises in store for scientists studying the planet and its natural satellites. New research by scientists at the University of Bristol has revealed an interesting quirk with Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, and it flies in the face of everything science has predicted.

Do-it-yourself: Proving the moon illusion is really an illusion.
The best time to see a supermoon is just after sunset. Something called the “moon illusion” makes the moon appear even bigger: The closer it is to the horizon, the larger it looks. No one knows exactly why this happens, but it is probably has something to do with our eyes. NASA has this handy hack so you yourself can prove it’s just an illusion. December 3rd’s Full Cold Moon will be the only supermoon of 2017.It should shine 16 percent brighter and 7 percent larger than normal.

Some snark (and details!) about NASA's proposed lunar space station
Remember NASA's Deep Space Gateway? The proposed miniature space station in lunar orbit that will serve as a training ground for deep space, and a waypoint for surface missions? Our next big step for the human exploration of the solar system? The project I wrote a big piece on last year, titled NASA unveiled new plans for getting humans to Mars, and hardly anyone noticed?

China plans to grow flowers and silkworms on the dark side of the moon
China hopes to create a 'mini biosphere' on the dark side of the Moon, with flowers and silkworms sustaining each other as they grow on the lifeless lunar surface. The unprecedented plan to create life in outer space is the most intriguing part of China's lunar probe mission later this year, and could be a major boost for dreams that humans will one day live on the Moon. The insects, plants, potato seeds and arabidopsis—a small flowering plant belonging to the mustard family - will be taken to the Moon on board the Chang'e-4 lander and rover in December.
