A Guide To Posting Images Securely On This Tribe

Correctly posting to t/microgrowery greatly increases the chances of positive discussion and a well informed exchange of information. We want the growers of this tribe to feel that they may share their images safely and privately.

How much information am I sharing just by posting an image?

It is important to consider how much information you are sharing when posting an image as you may be submitting details that you wish to remain private. Each image taken with digital camera or smart phone will contain recorded information, this information is knows as 'EXIF Data'. The details of this recorded data may include; the date the image was taken, details of the camera it was captured on and most importantly GPS coordinates. The most commonly used image hosting site Imgur strips images of EXIF data before uploading them, however to do this a third party did have access to the data at some point. If you are a bit iffy about this then there are avenues of removing EXIF data yourself.

You should read up on what EXIF data is and how it works, HERE is smart-phone-specific guide to removing EXIF Data from your phone and HERE is a guide to removing it from your digital camera.
