A few weeks after he was banned from visiting a London school by the Catholic church, Simon James Green was confronted with an array of protest paraphernalia. The author, whose stories for young adults have been applauded for reflecting the upside, as well as the angst, of queer teen lives, was at an awards ceremony in Bristol. Members of a local school’s LGBT+ society had made banners and leaflets proclaiming their solidarity, and denouncing “kids in Catholic school locked in the closet”.

In the Netherlands, children of lesbian and gay parents do better at school
A new study from the Netherlands finds that children raised by gay or lesbian parents do better at school than children raised by heterosexual parents. Previous studies of academic outcomes for children raised by same-sex parents have mostly relied on small sample sizes. But this new study, published last week in the journal American Sociological Review, includes data on 2,971 children with same-sex parents (2,786 lesbian couples and 185 gay male couples), and about 1.2 million children with different-sex (i.e. heterosexual) parents.

Instagram is banning all content promoting LGBT conversion therapy
Instagram has taken the decision to ban any content promoting so-called "conversion therapy" on its platform. Conversion therapy is the name given to any practice which purports that people can be "cured" of their sexual orientation or gender identity. "It is based on an assumption that being lesbian, gay, bi or trans is a mental illness that can be 'cured'. These therapies are both unethical and harmful," according to LGBTQ charity Stonewall.
