Reading Ourselves to Death
Join me in a thought experiment. Imagine you are imprisoned in a room by a despotic regime and allowed contact with the outside world only through a primitive computer. Called a text-only terminal, the computer lets you send and receive as many written messages as you like. It lets you read as many articles as you like.

Secrets of reptile and amphibian aging revealed
At 190 years old, Jonathan the Seychelles giant tortoise recently made news for being the “oldest living land animal in the world.” Although, anecdotal evidence like this exists that some species of turtles and other ectotherms — or ‘cold-blooded’ animals — live a long time, evidence is spotty and mostly focused on animals living in zoos or a few individuals living in the wild.

Not Just Bliss: the Case for Ignorance
When is ignorance is more liberating than limiting? If you're Donald Rumsfeld, this statement is helpful for sending your country into an unwitting war. If you’re me, it’s useful for much, much more. I believe ignorance isn't only a weapon to be used in political battles, arguments, or to manipulate and control populations. Ignorance is a powerful tool, and it canbe wielded for good.

The Drowned Scouts of Magician Lake
Wilbur Harper Sr. (W.C. to most everyone that knew him) heard his son shout and then felt a hard tug on his coat sleeve. He looked down to see his son Wayne’s ashen face staring wide-eyed at the lake water. “That boat is going down, Papa,” Wayne said. W.C. Harper followed his son’s gaze to the choppy water.

An eagle snatched a baby hawk for dinner, then ended up adopting it | CBC Radio
A pair of bald eagles near Nanaimo, B.C., have adopted a baby red-tailed hawk and are raising it alongside their own eaglet. But while the hawk is now part of the eagles’ family, it could have just as easily been their dinner.

Why You Can’t Remember Being Born: A Look at ‘Infantile Amnesia’
Whenever I teach about memory in my child development class at Rutgers University, I open by asking my students to recall their very first memories. Some students talk about their first day of pre-K; others talk about a time when they got hurt or upset; some cite the day their younger sibling was born.

The Sexist Pseudoscience at the Heart of Biology
FOR YEARS, STUDYING zoology made me feel like a sad misfit. Not because I loved spiders, enjoyed cutting up dead things I’d found by the side of the road, or would gladly root around in animal feces for clues as to what their owner had eaten. No, the source of my disquiet was my sex. Being female meant just one thing: I was a loser.

Why you may have a thinking digital twin within a decade
Most of us have been told by a friend that we have a doppelganger - some stranger they passed on the street who bore an uncanny resemblance to you. But imagine if you could create your very own twin, an exact copy of yourself, but one that lived a purely digital life? We are living in an age where everything that exists in the real world is being replicated digitally - our cities, our cars, our homes, and even ourselves.

Can Putin Be Overthrown?
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, victory was expected in a matter of days, if not hours. Four months later, the fighting is ongoing. With Russia’s struggling war effort and the battery of crippling international sanctions tanking its economy, Western media and analysts of the region have begun speculating about the potential of a “palace coup” — a coup by state elites — to overthrow Vladimir Putin.

The Election Sequel Might Change What You Think of Tracy Flick
Is Tracy Flick real? I know she’s a fictional character, a gung-ho high schooler introduced in Tom Perrotta’s 1998 novel Election and made famous by Reese Witherspoon in Alexander Payne’s 1999 movie. Ever since Witherspoon’s indelible performance, Tracy Flick has perched in the front row of the American cultural imagination, hand raised.

A study gave cash and therapy to men at risk of criminal behavior. 10 years later, the results are in.
What if someone told you that you could dramatically reduce the crime rate without resorting to coercive policing or incarceration? In fact, what if they said you could avert a serious crime — a robbery, say, or maybe even a murder — just by shelling out $1.50?
