Netflix banned from competing at Cannes Film Festival
Netflix has been banned from competing in the Cannes Film Festival, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Theirry Fremaux, the head of Cannes, told THR last week the ban is because Netflix refuses to release its films in theaters, choosing instead to debut them on its streaming service and, in some rare cases, do day-and-date releases so the film can be seen both online and off.

Hiro Murai Is the Filmmaker of the Year
Hiro Murai is having a moment. We’re nearing the halfway point of 2018 and you could make the case that the Tokyo-born director is the filmmaker of the year, and he hasn’t even made a feature. Between several exceptional episodes of Atlanta—including the haunting, beguiling “Teddy Perkins”—a couple of solid outings orchestrating the increasingly violent action on Barry, and the starkly confrontational video for Childish Gambino’s new single...

Michael Moore sarcastically slams Christians on Facebook. But reactions are way harsher.
The meme is not an unfamiliar one this time of year: “Rather than putting ‘Christ’ back in ‘Christmas,’ I’d settle for putting ‘Christ’ back in ‘Christians.'” But when the likes of left-wing documentary filmmaker Michael Moore puts the meme on his Facebook page — in front of his 2.3 million followers — it elicits a bit more of a reaction.

'Avengers: Infinity War' Created Red Skull Entirely With CGI
Avengers: Infinity War featured the return of Red Skull — an archnemesis of Captain America that first debuted in Marvel Studios' Captain America: The First Avenger. Although the studio approached Hugo Weaving to give him the shot to reprise his role, the actor ended up turning it down. Enter: The Walking Dead star Ross Marquand. Marquand — a well-known impressionist — lent his voice to Marvel Studios to provide a picture-perfect replication of Weaving's The First Avenger portrayal.

Paramount Scraps David Fincher’s ‘World War Z 2’ over Budget Concerns
The “Lucy with the football” game continues when it comes to David Fincher finally directing a big blockbuster tentpole. The Social Network filmmaker has flirted with big properties in years past ranging from Mission: Impossible 3 to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, none of which ever came to fruition. It appeared he’d finally be making the leap with World War Z 2, a zombie sequel that would reunite Fincher with...

Lena Headey on Saying Goodbye to ‘Game of Thrones’ and Cersei Lannister
Lena Headey says fuck a lot. She is covered in tattoos—over a dozen—and possessed of an insouciance and flair for badinage that comes with being the Yorkshire-bred tomboy daughter of a mustachioed cop who could seriously take the piss out of himself. The British actress is, in short, mega cool, so it’s little surprise she’s brought a character like Cersei Lannister, one of the most deliciously sinister to ever grace the screen, to thrilling life. “This is not my own work,” offers Headey, drawing attention to her makeup with a leisurely wave. “Yes, I lived in a tomboy phase

No Netflix films at Cannes for second year running, reports suggest
The loss of Netflix titles was perceived by many to be a heavy blow for last year’s Cannes film festival. After artistic director Thierry Frémaux ruled that titles from the streaming giant were ineligible to compete for the Palme d’Or, Netflix head Ted Sarandos duly pulled their full roster from the Croisette. Films such as Roma, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and many more duly played at rival festivals, before progressing to considerable acclaim.
