DAE think the elderly should have to take periodic driving tests to insure they can still safely drive?

Yes to a point. It's easy for the elderly to get isolated, and once they are no longer permitted to drive this can further exacerbate isolation. A driving test that maybe results in putting limits on their range, or limits night driving due to visibility issues could be an option rather than a complete ban. It would also depend on variables such as location-rural, city. Not being permitted to drive at all could severely limit an older persons ability to self care and force them into institutionalised care, and that needs to be balanced with the safety of other road users and pedestrians. The test should really be used to see what support the person needs to be able to continue driving safely.

yep I agree, limiting them to drive in certain conditions doesn't remove their freedom nor compromise on the safety of the public
