'Nobody calls it Czechia': Czech Republic's new name fails to catch on
With its imposing statue of the Czech patron saint and wide avenues leading toward historic Prague, Wenceslas Square should be the ideal place for defining a country’s national identity – or at least its name. So when the authorities decided to tamper with Czech Republic’s official branding they may have done well to road test the idea here, where national aspirations have often been asserted, and occasionally crushed, in dramatic fashion.

Czech Republic claims propaganda war by Russia and sets up counter-effort
The Czech government has accused Russia of conducting a propaganda war on its soil and is setting up a unit to counter what it says are networks of pro-Moscow puppet groups. “We want to get into every smartphone” to counter Russian disinformation, said Milan Chovanec, the Czech interior minister. The Czech counter-intelligence service said in September that Russia was conducting “an information war” in the Czech Republic, putting in place propaganda agents to destabilise the country.

Czech players who said female referee ‘belonged in kitchen’ told to train with women’s team
Sparta Prague have sent two players to train with the women’s team after they told a female assistant referee to stay in the kitchen. Lukas Vacha and Tomas Koubek were condemned by the Czech FA chairman and their club appointed them as ambassadors of the women’s team following comments they made against the assistant referee Lucie Ratajova last weekend. Ratajova failed to notice a clear offside as Sparta lost a 3-2 lead in the 92nd minute against Zbrojovka Brno following a goal by Alois Hycka last Sunday.

Czech Republic aims to be called Czechia in English | Prague Monitor
Prague, April 12 (CTK) - The Czech Republic should also use the official name Czechia and this shortened version should be added to the United Nations Geographical Names database that contains the official names of countries and cities in six languages, Foreign Minister Lubomir Zaoralek said yesterday. Long-lost Mozart, Salieri composition found in Prague
A long-lost collaborative effort between composers and putative rivals Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri has been found at a Czech museum. "It's a really valuable work... long thought to have been lost," Czech National Museum spokeswoman Sarka Dockalova said, adding that staff discovered it in the reserve collection. "It's a joint composition by Mozart and Salieri — a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte put to music."

The climb that left me frozen with fear
There are thousands of industrial chimneys in the Czech Republic, with many dating back to the late 19th Century - most are no longer used and a group of enthusiasts spend their weekends climbing the structures. Alastair Lawson joined them in Zelezny Brod, but soon regretted it. I am 40m (130ft) up a 120-year-old chimney in the north-east of the Czech Republic and I am having a minor panic attack. My legs feel like lead weights as I look down on the tiny figures on the ground below me.
