Iron Harvest, the RTS about farmers and mechs in the 1920s, is a Kickstarter success
Iron Harvest is an upcoming RTS set in a 1920s we never actually experienced, with giant, steam-driven war-bots and farmers earning fortunes digging up the "iron harvest" of weapons, ammunition, and shrapnel left behind by the First World War. We got a brief look at it in December when developer King Art Games released a trailer showcasing the game's dynamic, destructible cover and said a 1v1 multiplayer mode would be out in the spring. Now the studio has taken the project to Kickstarter in search of funding to support the creation of single-player campaigns.

They Did It: Hasbro Is Officially Producing Its Largest Star Wars Toy Ever
Star Wars toy collectors have been keeping a close eye on a special crowdfunding project over the past few weeks. It’s by none other than Hasbro and it’s for a giant (two feet long and over a foot high and wide) replica of Jabba the Hutt’s sail barge from Return of the Jedi. The hope was that 5,000 people would pledge $500 to make it—and they did.

Someone raised over $100,000 to make a wooden 'thinking egg' on Kickstarter
A wooden egg… why didn't I think of that? Where I come from, people will willingly fork over $20 for a two-ingredient dish consisting of bread and an avocado — which literally grow on trees around here (Southern California). So it's hard to make fun of a $13 egg handcrafted from wood, brass, or stone that's meant to serve as a reminder to chill the f--k out.

‘Star Citizen’ Court Documents Reveal the Messy Reality of Crowdfunding a $200 Million Game
Back in 2012, developer Roberts Space Industries (RSI) launched a Kickstarter asking for money to fund Star Citizen—an ambitious space game in the mold of Wing Commander. It’s 2018, and while parts of the game are playable in various forms, it's far from achieving what it set out to accomplish. So far, it’s collected more than $200 million in funding from fans eager to play it. Ken Lord was one of those fans, and an early backer of Star Citizen. He’s got a Golden Ticket, a mark on his account that singles him out as an early member of the community.

The Titan underwater drone promises to go deeper than its rivals
The majority of drones are designed for the sky, hence the phrase UAV (read: “unmanned aerial vehicle”) being used as a synonym. However, there are also a growing number of drones created for exploring underwater locations, too. The latest of these is an underwater drone named Titan, which recently splashed down on Kickstarter with the goal of raising funds to go into production.

Donations pour in for man holding yard sales to fund own funeral
Two friends who set up a GoFundMe page for a Pennsylvania man who’d been holding yard sales to pay for his own funeral expenses say they’ve received so many donations they’re planning to help other veterans in similar situations. David Dunkleberger and his friend Ed Sheets pulled into a yard sale in Brownstown last month. The man running it, 66-year-old Willie Davis, was selling his belongings to pay for his funeral.

This Bitcoin Startup Is Working on Free Speech Alternatives to Patreon
Patreon has been making the case for censorship-resistant money increasingly apparent. The platform allows members to contribute to artists or creators that they support. These contributions are made via standard payment methods like credit cards. Over the past few months, there has been an increase in public outcry over multiple separate instances where Patreon has removed creators from its platform. BitPatron, a Bitcoin-friendly version of the website, has recently come to the surface as a possible alternative.

In epic fail, Meizu's $1300 portless phone gets just 29 pre-orders on Indiegogo
A little over a month ago, Meizu announced that its portless "concept" phone, the Zero, would be available to actually buy via an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign. At a price of $1300, it was certainly expensive, but not obscenely so - after all, mass produced devices from Samsung and Apple now easily exceed such a price.

Energizer’s 18,000mAh phone-battery monster is an Indiegogo flop
The Energizer name figured prominently at Mobile World Congress this year, courtesy of a prototype Android smartphone that was about an inch thick, consisting mostly of a giant battery. The 18,000mAh Energizer Power Max P18K Pop was a preview of something Avenir Telecom, the company licensing the battery brand’s name for use on phones, wanted to mass-produce and bring to the market by this summer.

PeerStreet Review
As I indicated in a prior post, I've decided to experiment with Equity Crowdfunding to determine if it's a viable passive income stream. I narrowed the field down to 3 online platforms, each with their particular twist on equity crowdfunding. The plan is to invest $10,000 with each platform over the next 12-18 months to get some hands-on experience with how they operate. The ultimate goal, of course, is to turn the experiment into a permanent investment strategy to help fund my Freedom Years.
